Desert Dodge by MylaFox Desert Dodge by MylaFox
Do you recall this game? It's the classic trio of '93 from SegaSonic Arcade. :)

---

First off, I want to make it clear that those aren't fancharacters! They're official Sega characters, originally making their first debut in '93 for an arcade game simply called "SegaSonic the Hedgehog." Mighty the Armadillo (seen on the bottom) was later to be used in Knuckles' Chaotix for the Sega 32X home gaming console in 1995. Since it is said that he was originally a concept for the Sonic that we know today, he is one of the oldest characters there are-- and that explains his strong resemblance to the hedgehog. On that note, I have modified his appearance intentionally. This was my first time illustrating Mighty, but I wanted to add my own artistic liberties afterwards. Armadillos generally have large tails, so I thought he should have one too. In the end, I think this balances out the character a little better, and helps make him more distinguishable. I also segmented his outer armor into layers, since he theoretically would be unable to flex without them. Consider this my "modernized" take on Mighty, since he never had an official makeover like the others. If you dislike my modifications, that's alright-- but please respect my artistic choices. ^^

At the top of the image is my first illustration of Ray the Flying Squirrel. Unlike Mighty, he has not made another official appearance in any Sonic game since the old arcade title. However, he is still used in the official Archie Sonic Comics. I have used their new design for him in this painting.

The background was my first attempt at something dry, hot and sandy. It was pretty fun painting out a desert. I'm not fully happy with it, but there's always room for improvement! This was inspired by the level "Desert Dodge" in SegaSonic Arcade. While it doesn't really bear much resemblance to the original, I believe the essence is still there. (I think I even spot a badnik in the distance!)

I am happy with Sonic's pose here. I've been pushing myself to go for more "flowing" and "dynamic" poses, forcing my characters to flex more and push the limits. I think this gives off a good sense of motion, without going too overboard. This isn't perfect, but it gives me confidence in that I am improving. The other poses are a little bit generic, and Mighty probably looks too relaxed-- though we can just imagine he keeps a level head. ;)

Overall, I hope you enjoy this little tribute to an often overlooked trio of awesomeness!
